Experiments and Multiscale Modeling of High-Temperature Water Radiolysis in Nuclear Reactor Environments
Aqueous radiation chemistry is ubiquitous throughout the nuclear fuel cycle. Pulse radiolysis and gamma irradiation experiments at Idaho National Laboratory have determined rate coefficients for metal ion reactions with water radiolysis products up to 325 °C, providing mechanistic insight into how reaction pathways shift with temperature. These data feed directly into a stochastic Independent Reaction Times model, extended here to 350 °C, which predicts time-dependent yields of key radiolytic species. Together, the experimental and computational results establish a deeper understanding of aqueous radiation chemistry under reactor, reprocessing, and waste storage conditions.

Effective pH control is essential for minimising corrosion. Corrosion within the secondary circuit can ultimately compromise structural integrity and the corrosion products released into the circuit can deposit and accumulate within steam generators. The work utilises EPRI Plant Chemistry Simulator (PCS) software to model the pHT at different locations around the Sizewell B (SZB) secondary circuit for various combinations of ammonia and ethanolamine (ETA).The results provide insight into optimising the dosing strategy to maintain protective conditions around the whole secondary circuit specifically against flow accelerated corrosion and general corrosion of carbon steel.
